Are Linen Pants Actually Cooler Than Shorts?

Are Linen Pants Actually Cooler Than Shorts?

Are Linen Pants Actually Cooler Than Shorts?

Usually yes. Loose linen pants move more air across the skin than shorts do, because the fabric lifts away from the leg and pulls warm air out as you walk. Shorts expose more skin but trap air where they sit. The deciding factor is weave, not coverage. An open plain weave linen at [gsm] will out-cool a dense cotton short every time.

Coverage is not the same as cooling

It feels obvious that less fabric means less heat. It is not how the body works. Skin cools by evaporating sweat, and evaporation needs moving air. Bare skin in still air sits in its own warm layer. Covered skin with air passing through the cloth loses heat faster.

Add direct sun and the gap widens. Exposed thighs absorb radiant heat all afternoon. A light linen trouser reflects most of it while still letting your own heat out.

The three things that decide it

The fibre. Linen is a bast fibre, hollow in the centre, which means it takes up moisture and releases it into the air rather than holding it against you. Cotton does the same more slowly. Polyester does not do it at all.

The weave. Linen is woven as an open plain weave, so there is physical space between the yarns. That space is where the air moves. A tightly woven cotton drill can be the same weight and feel twice as hot.

The cut. A wide or flared leg works as a bellows. Every step pushes warm air out at the hem and draws cooler air in at the waist. A slim leg cannot do this, which is why skinny linen pants disappoint.

What to wear them with above 35 degrees

Keep the top half as loose as the bottom. A fitted singlet under a wide linen pant puts all the heat in one place. A cropped top with a gap at the waist lets air through the middle, which is where you hold the most warmth.

The Fern Crop Flare Pant sits high and flares from the knee, so the bellows effect starts at the hip rather than the ankle. The Kai Satin Pant does the same thing in viscose, cooler to the touch and almost crease proof, which makes it the one to travel in.

Sizing, 6 to 22

Every piece here is cut from a 6 to a 22 from the same pattern block, graded rather than scaled, so the rise and the leg opening stay in proportion at every size.

Ava is 179cm and wears a size 8, with an 84cm bust, 65cm waist and 94cm hip. Bianca is 175cm and wears a size 16, with a 90cm waist and 120cm hip. The Fern Crop Flare Pant is 100% cotton slub, cold hand wash, and fits true to size.

Frequently asked

Do linen pants need ironing?

No. Linen creases because the fibre is stiff, and that is the fibre doing its job. Hang them in a steamy bathroom and most of it drops out.

Are linen pants too hot for 40 degrees?

No. Above about 38 they outperform shorts, because sun on bare skin raises body temperature faster than covered skin in moving air does.

What do you wear under linen pants?

Nothing structured. Seamless underwear, no slip. A lining cancels out the open weave entirely.

Will linen pants go see-through in strong sun?

A pale linen below about [gsm] will. Ours are cut at [gsm], which is above the threshold.

Are linen pants smart enough for work?

In a dark colourway with a flat front, yes. Creasing reads as relaxed rather than scruffy once the colour is deep enough.
